[주]로스앤젤레스총영사관(김영완 총영사)은 지난 6월17일 (화) UCLA 공대와 공동으로“2025 한미 첨단기술 컨퍼런스(2025 Korea-US Emerging Technology Conference)”를 개최했다고 밝혔다. 

 UCLA·Caltech 교수 등 미 서부지역 과학자, 기업인, 학생 등 100명 이상이 참석하였으며, 신기술 분야의 기회와 도전, 한미 협력 방안을 다각적으로 논의하는 계기가 되었다.

총영사관과 UCLA 공대는 지난해 2024..11월 ‘한미 첨단기술 컨퍼런스’를 공동 개최했던 바, 협력 성과를 바탕으로 올해 2차 행사 개최하게 됐다. 

김영완 총영사는 환영사를 통해 이달초 출범한 우리 신정부가 AI 3대 강국 도약 및 미래 첨단산업 육성을 핵심 전략 목표로 설정한 가운데, 한미 첨단기술 협력을 주제로 이번 포럼이 개최된 것은 매우 시의적절하다고 평가했다. 

또한 한미 동맹의 중요성을 강조하면서, 이번 행사가 에너지, 우주·항공, 인공지능(AI) 분야에서 양국 간 새로운 협력의 기회를 만들어 나가는 계기가 되기를 기대한다고 밝혔다. 

박아형 학장은 UCLA가 추구하는 5대 전략 중 하나가 ‘글로벌 대학으로서 위상을 확대하는 것(Expand our reach as a global university)’이라고 소개하고, 작년에 이어 올해 두 번째로 개최되는 이번 컨퍼런스를 통해 첨단과학 기술 및 산업 발전에 있어 남가주 사회의 주요 구성원인 한인 커뮤니티 나아가 핵심 협력국 한국과의 파트너십이 더욱 확대되기를 기대한다고 말했다. 

이번 컨퍼런스는 ▴에너지 ▴우주·항공 ▴인공지능(AI) 3개 세션으로 진행되었으며, 분야별 신기술 동향과 함께 한미 협력 방안이 논의됐다.

첫번째 세션에서는▴한국 원자력 기술 발전과 소형원자로 분야 한미 협력*(임인철) ▴태양광 에너지 기술과 산업 발전(Reegan Moen, 박영춘) 주제 발표 이후 한미 협력 방안(에너지 그리드, 기술·산업·인력 교류 협력 등)이 모색됐는데 지난 4월 한국원자력연구원/현대엔지니어링/MPR 컨소시엄은 미주리대와 ‘차세대연구로(NextGen MURR) 설계 수출 계약을 체결했으며, 이는 미국에 연구로 설계를 수출하는 최초 사례가 됐다고 전했다. 

 두번째 세션에서는 ▴우주 천체망원경 개발과 도전과제(Jonathan Arenberg) ▴AI와 우주·항공 기술 접목(정순조) ▴우주 경제 발전과 혁신(Elizabeth Reynolds) 주제 발표 이후 거대 우주 프로젝트뿐만 아니라 다양한 파생 혁신기술에서 한미 협력 가능성이 모색되었다. 

마지막 세션에서는▴효율적인 데이터 분석을 위한 AI 활용과 도전과제(Eunice Jun) ▴AI 기술과 모바일 게임(Kyu Lee) 주제 발표 이후 한미 및 글로벌 협력 방안(AI 규범 마련, 다양한 연구·산업 접목 등)이 논의됐다. 

올해는 특히 부대행사로서 중소벤처기업진흥공단(KOSME)과 협력하여 한미 테크 스타트업* 발표회와 부스 운영을 통해 창의적인 중소기업들이 사업 아이템을 홍보하고 미 서부 전문가들과 기술도 협의하는 기회를 마련되어 그 의미를 더했다. 

아울러, 네트워킹 리셉션을 통해 한미 첨단기술 전문가, 기업 및 스타트업, 유관기관 관계자 간 교류하고 새로운 협력 가능성을 모색하는 시간도 가졌다.
